“Nightstar, I want to volunteer for the next search patrol” A young tom dipped his head as he stood before his leader. Since the last few sunrises, the NightClan leader was glum and never interacted with his clanmates. Even Maplefur was beginning to worry about his unusual behavior.
Nightstar didn’t say a word but just lay in his nest staring at the cold floor of his cave-like den. The young tom began to be impatient at his leader. “Nightstar, we are doing the best we can to find your brother but you have to give us time to find him. Perhaps-“
“Perhaps nothing!” Nightstar spat. “I want no more search patrols to go out anymore. It is keeping us behind from our regular duties. Do you understand Hailclaw?” The bold gray tom didn’t bother to flinch at his leader’s harsh tone. “Yes, Nightstar.” He stalked out of the den only with the soft mumbling under his cold breath. Many of his clanmates viewed him as an idol and many saw him as a merciless warrior that would kill for what he wanted. Sudden paw steps patted from behind Hailclaw. His denmate Yellowheart came to a halt next to his friend. “Hailclaw, seems like you got another whooping from the boss!” He teased. Hailclaw gave a disgusted snort. “I can never understand Nightstar. He asks for one thing then scolds for doing it. I just wish died sooner or later. He deserves to have his brother run away.” Yellowheart didn’t respond to his evil attitude of his leader. He knew he never meant what he said so he never cared. “I wonder what made Lizardstorm run away. He was just fine before that.” He pointed out.
Hailclaw didn’t seem to be interested in his little chat so he began to stroll away towards the fresh-kill pile. The morning rays of the sun beamed down through the thick leaves of the forest. The grass was still damp from the rain storm that hit the day after Lizardstorm had escaped. Swiping with his paw, the grey tom picked out a fat crow from the pile.
“Hey,” The young apprentice Fernpaw was lashing her tail behind him with hopeful eyes. “The elders may enjoy that piece of kill. Maybe you could give it to them; it would show a lot of respect.” She suggested. Fernpaw loved to work hard for her clan. “They can eat something else! I picked out this piece of prey and I’m not sharing it! I don’t have time to waste my hunting on old cats!” he snapped. Yellowheart was silent. He never rejected his friend’s ugly attitude because he believed that he was as loyal as any other cat. “Common Hailclaw, leave her alone.” He brushed his fur as he padded away letting Hailclaw follow. Fernpaw was disappointed and looked over to see her mentor, a sleek brown tom with broad muscles. “Don’t worry Fernpaw,” He started. “Hailclaw will have to show more respect if he wants to stay in our clan.” His yellow eyes watched the gray tom follow his friend stalk into their den. “But Hailclaw is a good cat, right Brownleaf?” She squealed, but the huge tom only squint his eyes to slits. He never trusted Hailclaw and hoped that Nightstar would do something about him before it was too late. Brownleaf followed Hailclaw into the Warrior’s Den eager to speak with the gray tom. “Hailclaw,” He mewed and cast his eyes on the tom who was chewing on the crow. “I need to speak with you.” The brown warrior signaled his tail outside but Hailclaw didn’t move a muscle. “What are you, the clan leader? Can’t you see I’m busy? I haven’t had food since last night!” He snarled. Brownleaf blinked in slight surprise, then turned his head to Yellowheart for any emotion but he was blank, licking at his paw peacefully. “Yellowheart, if you don’t mind me to speak privately to Hailclaw?” standing to his paws, Yellowheart began to head out wordlessly just as Hailclaw hissed. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“Leave, Yellowheart!” Brownleaf countered. Yellowheart flinched and nodded to Brownleaf and stalked out. “Hailclaw, your behavior is tempting me to report to Nightstar! How can you be so evil? Show some respect to your clanmates for once!” the brown tom snarled. “You warriors mean nothing to me! I care for myself only; I couldn’t care less for what happens to anycat! If I wanted food, I’d hunt it myself, if I wanted to sleep I’d make my nest myself.” He paused in fury. “If I wanted a mate, I would find her, myself!” he finished leaving Brownleaf in shame for him. The Den was empty and he was glad no other cat had heard his speech. “You should be ashamed of yourself!” Giving a grunt, He stalked out of the den leaving Hailclaw with a menacing expression. No cat will get in my way for what I want…
